BAY’S ASA THOMAS WINS JD WELSH CUP PLAYER OF THE ROUND

By Ronald Bridges

Asa Thomas of Trearddur Bay Utd has been awarded the JD Welsh Cup Player of the Round for the 1st Qualifying Round.

The Bangor-born 24 year old excelled in the Bay’s opening Cup game of the season against Glan Conwy. The fixture was always going to be a difficult test for the newly promoted Trearddur Bay, as their visitors are a long established club with much experience and history at a higher level.

Striker Thomas started the game on the bench, but after Glan Conwy took a 76th minute lead, the double substitution and introduction of Thomas and Jordie Murphy was to become a game changer.
In the 89th minute, Bay were awarded a direct free kick just outside the visitors goal area. With virtually every player crowded into the area super-sub Thomas struck a sublime free kick that curled around the wall with such power and accuracy it bent just inside the upright leaving the Glan Conwy ‘keeper with no chance.

The match went to extra time and the substitute, who had a point to prove, then swung the momentum in Bay’s favour.

The tie was settled beyond doubt in the second period of extra time with four quick fire goals from Thomas with his second (105 min), Shaun Jenkins (106 min), Curt Williams (112 min) and to round off a fine afternoon, the Player of the Round became a hat-trick hero.

The striker’s manager, Mark Williams, was delighted with the news and told the FAW; “Asa has returned to the club for his second spell and has already proven, if he focuses on his discipline he can be a prolific striker at this level. He has the ability to change games and is an important part of this season’s squad.”

Thomas and his teammates are back in JD Welsh Cup action this weekend when they play their 2nd Qualifying Round game at home against Amlwch Town in a mouth-watering Anglesey derby. The match will kick-off at 2:30pm at Lon Isallt and both sides will be desperate to get their names in Monday’s JD Welsh Cup Round 1 draw.

Thomas will receive a glass memento, which will be presented before Saturday’s match and along with all of the other winners in subsequent rounds; the striker will be invited to a presentation on the pitch at the JD Welsh Cup Final in May to celebrate his place in the JD Welsh Cup Team of the Season 2015.
